Healthy Foods To Help Improve Skin Elasticity

As you get older, your skin loses elasticity. With time, your skin may become less elastic and more prone to wrinkles. As muscles begin to weaken and skin begins to sag, you may feel less confident about the way you look.

Fortunately, certain foods can help retain your skin’s elasticity as you age. These foods contain beneficial nutrients such as zinc and vitamin C, essential for maintaining healthy skin. So, make sure you incorporate them into your daily diet to reap the benefits:

Figs
Your diet should include a variety of fruits, which are good sources of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps keep skin smooth and elastic and maintains the health of hair follicles. Fruits are also high in vitamin C and E, which help with collagen production (collagen is essential to keeping skin looking young).

Papaya
Papayas contain antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and fiber, which will help keep your skin looking young.

Watermelon
Watermelon contains vitamins C and A, which work together to keep the skin healthy. Watermelons also contain lycopene, which is responsible for their bright pink color.

Lycopene is an antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by UV light. Watermelon contains potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus — all three are essential minerals required for proper cell function and health.

Olives
Olives make a great addition to any healthy diet. They’re rich in vitamins A and E and antioxidants, which help keep your skin soft and smooth. They also contain iron and calcium, nutrients that are crucial for healthy hair growth. They’re also high in monounsaturated fats, an essential nutrient that helps keep your body working properly by lowering harmful cholesterol levels and increasing bone density.

Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are an excellent vitamin A source, essential for healthy skin. Vitamin C, also found in sweet potatoes, helps with skin elasticity and immune function.

Beta-carotene is another nutrient in sweet potatoes that can help boost your natural defenses against the sun’s damaging rays. Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins E and K—both of which may help reduce inflammation from acne scars and other skin conditions, such as rosacea or psoriasis.

Avocados
Avocados are full of vitamin E and antioxidants, which means that they can help repair the damage that causes your skin to age. They’re rich in fiber, which helps with digestion, keeping you feeling full longer.

They also contain monounsaturated fats, improving heart health. As if this wasn’t enough to convince you to add avocados to your diet, they also contain potassium—a mineral that helps keep fluid levels balanced in the body and prevent muscle cramps.

Oysters
Oysters are one of those foods that have been said to do everything from helping you live longer to curing baldness. Oysters are rich in zinc, which is needed for collagen production, and zinc works alongside vitamin C to promote collagen production. The nutrients in oysters help repair and keep skin hydrated for complexion with even textures through skin elasticity.

Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamin E, which helps maintain skin elasticity. They contain zinc, which is also good for your skin. As if that weren’t enough, sunflower seeds provide an excellent amount of vitamin B1 as well, this nutrient helps keep eyesight sharp and reduce the risk for cataracts (a clouding in the lens). Having a handful of sunflower seeds might seem like a small snack but is packed with beneficial nutrients for skin care.

Salmon
Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which makes its skin flexible. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce inflammation, another factor that impacts skin elasticity. Salmon is an excellent source of protein, which is important for everyone’s diet but especially useful when eating a meal containing extra protein will lead to less bloating and water retention. This benefit applies directly to the skin as well.

Lettuce
Lettuce is a good source of vitamin A, essential to maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness. Vitamin C also helps with collagen production, so it’s another nutrient you’ll want to ensure is part of your diet. Lettuce has few calories, making it an easy addition to any meal.

Skin Care And Your Diet
Eating the right food can help keep your skin elastic as you age. Certain foods will help your skin retain its elasticity, including:

  • Oily fish, like salmon and mackerel.
  • Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach or kale (it should be noted that these are not the same thing).
  • Yogurt with live cultures.

The great thing about aging is that it’s inevitable, so you have plenty of time to try out all these foods and figure out which ones work best for you. Eating right isn’t the only change you need to make to stay healthy as you age. Exercise regularly and drink lots of water daily to ensure your body stays fit and hydrated—it will also help prevent wrinkles.
